There seems to be a stigma attached to a Muslim women's way of dressing, that it's in some way oppressive or maybe someone is forcing her to dress like that. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Nuns are respected by their clothing, while Muslim women rarely are. Muslim women are often thought of as "oppressed' and/or "degraded" while Catholic Nuns are admired. 

Muslim women are commanded by Almighty God to cover so that they may be recognized for what they are, not because some man is making them.

“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised (as believing women) and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.” (Quran 33:59)

Even some Musilm women have an incorrect understanding about the reason for dressing modestly, believing that it's to prevent things like rape or to help a man "curb his desire". Rape is a hate crime. Even 80 and 90 year old women are raped, so that idea has nothing to do with the way a woman is dressed. For curbing men's "desires"...that's their problem for which they are responsible. Covering is not for those reasons. Simply put, Muslim women cover so that they may be known for what they are. Isn't that the same principal that Catholic nuns have adopted? You know a nun, when you see one, by the way she's dressed?

This does, however, come with some perks.

It's the Muslim woman's view that women in the west are the ones who are oppressed and degraded by the way they dress. Oppressed because western women feel like they have to meet the unrealistic size and weight requirements of the fashion industry, forced to wear uncomfortable undergarments that squash them in and/or push them out. They wear high-heel shoes that are bad for their back and feet and suffer through panty-hose among other things.

Muslim women feel that western women are degraded because they're trying to fulfill the skewed perception that men have of them. As if they are less than a woman if they don't live up to "Barbie" standards. This is degrading because it reduces women to nothing more than a piece of meat, a sex object, something less than human. It's demoralizing to their self-esteem when they can't attain the unrealistic goals, rather than be happy and content with what God has given them.

The  Muslim, Christian and Jewish woman who observes modest dress knows that dressing modestly means liberation. It means freedom from having to conform to the unrealistic expectations placed on them by the fashion industry. It means freedom from being viewed as a sex object.

The greatest satisfaction of all, however, is knowing that what they're doing is what is pleasing to The Almighty.
